First Week Of School Lessons and FREEBIES!

Are you looking for some ideas on how to begin that first week of school? Here's how we spent our first few days!

I like to have what I call a "soft start" to the school year and that includes lots of stories, crafts and fun.  Kids need to build their stamina for sitting and working for long periods of time, so I find that when I do fun activities with my Firsties I have a better year in the long run.

We started on Day 1 by reading an all time favorite "First Grade Jitters".

This is a cute story about a little boy who is nervous about his first day of school, but when he sees his friends they put his mind at ease.  We made some Jitter Juice to help ease our worries and did an interactive writing listing the ingredients for Jitter Juice.

We also started our Poetry Notebook with the poem "Jitter Juice". You can grab a copy of the poem as a freebie here.

On Day 2 it was time to talk about classroom rules with the story "David Goes to School"

If you have never read the "David" books they are adorable stories about a little boy who has some naughty behaviors but a loving heart underneath it all.  We made David and used interactive writing to write a list of "Our Class No No's".

On Day 3,  we met the lovable "Pete The Cat".

We read the story "Pete the Cat Rocking in My School Shoes" and made a list of things we like to do in our new school shoes, using interactive writing.  We made a simple little shoe craft and broke out our brand new journals! Using a review of some kindergarten words, my firsties wrote the sentence "I like to ___________." and completed it with something they like to do in their new shoes.

Finally, We finished up our week on Day 4 with another story about Pete  ~ "Pete The Cat I Love My White Shoes".

We made a super cute Pete and did a rhyming activity.  You can pick up this Pete pattern for free here.

As you can see we had a GREAT first week of school!  If you don't have copies of these books, but want to use them with your kiddos, no worries!  You can watch them all for free right here. Do you need more Pete the Cat or Back to School Ideas?  Follow me on Pinterest here
